UT Austin's Longhorn Racing Solar team is one of the oldest student engineering teams on campus. Founded in 1988, as one of the first ten teams competing in the American Solar Challenge, we design and build innovative, road-legal solar vehicles, from a custom electronics package and high-voltage battery to a carbon-fiber composite chassis and aerodynamics package housing our solar array.

Every year, we compete in the Formula Sun Grand Prix (FSGP), racing head-to-head against universities from around the world to complete as many laps as possible using only solar power. This past July 2026, our latest car, High Noon, placed #18 out of 47 entrants at FSGP, completing 59 laps (183 miles) over three days of endurance racing at Brainerd International Raceway, marking our first time on the grid in over a decade.

As we enter a new design cycle, we're aiming to build the lightest, fastest, and most efficient car in team history. We operate within some of the tightest design constraints in collegiate engineering (our power budget is roughly that of a low-end toaster), and our competition is radically different from most collegiate racing teams.
